Programme Highlight

The dynamic response of civil infrastructure and transportation systems under service loads is a critical study area for ensuring structural safety, comfort, and longevity. This research investigates the dynamic behaviour of buildings, bridges and floors subjected to various loading conditions, including random excitations, wind forces and human activities, through ambient and forced vibration testings. With the use of no cables or radio waves, novel oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO)-based advanced sensing methodologies time-synchronised data logger is employed to capture high-fidelity vibration data, facilitating precise system identification and damping estimation. Nonlinearities in the structural response are examined to understand complex dynamic interactions better. Vibration control strategies, encompassing both passive and active control mechanisms, are evaluated for their efficacy in mitigating undesirable vibrations. Passive rail dampers and innovative particle damping techniques are explored as practical solutions for enhancing vibration serviceability. Furthermore, finite element (FE) models are developed and iteratively updated with experimental data to improve predictive accuracy. The comprehensive analysis contributes to optimising the dynamic performance and serviceability of civil structures, providing a foundation for future advancements in vibration control and infrastructure resilience.
