Programme Highlight

Recent developments in smart mobility technology herald rapid transitions in society. Several mobility services such as bike-sharing, scooter sharing, ridesharing, ride-sourcing, and shared automated vehicles have emerged, promoting multimodal travel. These emerging services would complement and/or compete with existing transportation modes, leading to significant transformations in people's travel choices, accessibility and mobility patterns. In this context, the planning and operation of transportation systems will have to be completely rethought in order to exploit the changes in a sustainable and flexible way. Understanding the demand for the emerging mobility services is key to capitalizing on the changing landscape. The demand is determined by people's travel behavior using the emerging services compared to existing transportation modes. Classical and newly advanced modeling techniques should be combined to better understand the demand and evaluate scenarios of what the future of transportation will be. Therefore, this webinar covers recent developments in emerging mobility services and classical and newly advanced approaches in travel behavior modeling to understand their demand.

Speakers
Dr Sunghoon Jang received his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Planning from the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. Prior to joining PolyU as an Assistant Professor, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Eindhoven University of Technology and as a senior researcher at the Seoul National University. He is an expert in advanced travel behavior modeling, aiming to promote citizens' sustainable and active travel behavior to contribute to green transportation. Based on the understanding of citizens’ adoption and use of smart mobility systems, his research has been providing new insights into how to shape travel behavior, design sustainable transportation infrastructure, and improve transport policies together. He is currently Section Editor (Transportation Engineering) in KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Korean Society of Transportation.
