Programme Highlight

The 1.7km long cross-harbour section of MTR Shatin to Central Link (SCL) is going to be constructed by “Immersed Tube” method under the SCL Contract 1121. All immersed tube tunnel elements are pre-fabricated on the casting yard at Shek O and then towed to Victoria Harbour for installation. This seminar describes the details and advantages of the immersed tunnel method, the procedure of tunnel pre-fabrication, and the method of installation / connection underwater. It also highlights some unique challenges on this project and describes several innovative construction methods employed to overcome them.

Speakers

Mr. Fumihiro AIKAWA is the Construction Manager of Contract 1121 under the MTR Corporation Limited’s Shatin to Central Link Project. Mr. AIKAWA has over 32 years of practical experience in tunnelling especially for the immersed tube tunnel method including the construction of the Eastern Harbour Crossing, Western Harbour Crossing and MTR Airport Express Rail (cross-harbour tunnel section) in Hong Kong. In addition, he has also participated in other major tunnel and highway projects in Perth, Australia and Sri Lanka. He has joined the MTR Corporation Limited as the Construction Manager for the SCL Contract 1121 since 2013. He is a Fellow member of HKIE, RPE, P.E.Jp.

Mr. Jorn Hansen is the Engineering Manager of Penta Ocean – China State Joint Venture (PCJV). Mr. Jorn Hansen has been involved in heavy and marine related civil engineering projects as well as the oil and gas industry over the last 35 years. He has worked on a number of immersed tube projects, covering both the design of permanent and temporary works as well as the construction. Projects include, the Eastern Harbour Crossing in Hong Kong, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and the Central Artery Project, in Boston, MA.  He joined PCJV during the tender process in 2014 and continued on after the award of contract. He is a member of ICE and has a MSc in Concrete Structures and Technology.
