Technical Seminar on “Nutrient Removal in an Innovative Biological System”

Date, time & venue
2007-01-17;;

This seminar will introduce two combined UMBR (Upflow Multi-layer Bio-reactor)-activated sludge-clarifier system by single-sludge, called the KNR1 (Kwon’s Nutrient Removal) and UMBR-aerobic biofilm reactor with inclined plates, called the KNR2. UMBR is a reactor of multi-function, which acts as primary tank, anaerobic reactor, anoxic reactor, and thickener. The operating results of the KNR1 system show that it is effective in treating sewage of low C/N ratio or without primary settling tank. The sludge blanket in the UMBR of the KNR2 was maintained at a constant level by an automatic control device so that clear water could flow into the post aerobic biofilm reactor. It led to improve the performance of the biofilm reactor due to preventing of excess microbial attachment on the media surface and no requirement for a large clarifier caused by low solid loading.

Speaker
Professor Shin obtained his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1982. Prof. Shin is a well known researcher in wastewater treatment. He is currently Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and was Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1998 to 2000.
