The annual dinner of the Civil Division was successfully held on 1 November 2012 at the JW Marriott Hong Kong Hotel. The dinner attended by more than 500 fellow members and guests highlighted the theme of the past, the present and the future of the civil engineering profession in Hong Kong. Ir Johnson Lee, Chairman of the Organising Committee, gave a welcome address, followed by Ir David Lau, Chairman of the Civil Division who gave an aspiring speech on topic related to the importance of the civil engineering profession to society Members and guests were also very impressed by the masterful speech by our guest of honor, Mr Paul MP Chan, Secretary for Development, who shared his insights on government’s latest plans on infrastructure development.
The highlights of the evening were presentation of commemorative medallions to past Chairmen of the Civil Division and a dancing performance by a group of talented and young civil engineers from all walks of life. They were also joined by some special guests, including Ir CS Wai, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of Development Bureau and Ir TC Chew, Projects Director of MTR, Ir Joseph Choi, Past Chairman of Civil Division and Ir Laurel Leung, current Committee Member who sang three songs featuring the theme of the annual dinner. While Ir Chew highlighted civil engineers' contributions to society, Ir Wai emphasized the importance of site safety at the performance. The whole performance was accorded with high praises. Members were impressed by the dedication of the performers towards delivering a good show with limited practice opportunities.
All participants enjoyed the evening under a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere filled with laughter. Through this dinner, the Division was able to reinforce its network among the civil engineering professionals and to continue strengthening our collaboration with various sectors of the engineering industry.
