Programme Highlights
Septic tank systems have been used for unsewered village areas in Wang Chau, Yuen Long. To improve the sanitary conditions, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is implementing a village sewerage project for the unsewered areas in Wang Chau. During detailed design stage of the project, a thorough review of the sewerage design (Original Design) that was adopted in earlier stage of the project was carried out. In the Original Design, the unsewered areas were divided into two separate sewage catchments such that two separate sewage pumping stations with shallow sewers and rising mains were proposed. Having considered several aspects such as villagers’ views, environmental acceptability, land use, management and maintenance, the Original Design has been substantially modified (Modified Design). In the Modified Design, the two sewage pumping stations are integrated into one to be constructed within an existing pumping station compound far away from the villages. In addition to the savings in both capital and operation costs, the Modified Design is well accepted by the villagers and is more environmentally friendly.
The talk will highlight the out-of-box considerations that have been taken in achieving a more effective sewage collection system design for Wang Chau.
