Report

 Reported by Mr. Manuel Law

HATS Stage 2A involves the construction of a network of interconnected sewage tunnels and vertical shafts for the conveyance of the currently discharged preliminary treated sewage from the northern and southwestern parts of Hong Kong Island to Stonecutters Island for proper treatment; and the expansion of Stonecutters Island sewage treatment works to provide centralised chemical treatment for all sewage from the whole of the HATS catchment.

The scope of works of the Contract No. DC/2007/23 includes construction of a 12km long sewage conveyance system (SCS) from North Point Preliminary Treatment Works (PTW) to Stonecutters Island (SCI) Sewage Treatment Works via Wan Chai East PTW, Central PTW and Sai Ying Pun junction shaft, and construction of drop/junction/riser shafts at these locations.  The depth of the SCS is about 140-160m below ground level and sizes ranging from oval shapes of 1.7-5.6m2 to circular shape of 3m dia.  In addition, it is required to construct 3 no. temporary production shafts at North Point, Wan Chai East and Stonecutters Island to provide access for the construction of the SCS.

It was followed by an introduction of the overall HATS Stage 2Aconstruction project using the displayed model exhibited in site office.

The participants were then led to get a close up view on the production shaft, mucking system and noise enclosureset up of the production shaft at North Point. Ir Edith Sia, Resident Engineer of AECOM Asia Co. Ltd, explained in details the construction methodology of blasting operation and general logistics of the site.

Participants were then led to the purpose-built roof at the site office, where participants were shown an overview of the site as well as a rest place for site staff.
