Chairman’s Message
This report can be shortened into two words if necessary. "Busy" is the first word for the whole CV Division committee, the Division, the Headquarters as well as the civil engineering industry in Hong Kong this year. There are so many activities, that I do not think I can elaborate all here, please refer to the information posted on our website and printed in the AGM booklet.
In organizing a day event, there are weeks of works for the Organizing Committees at the back of the scene. We had been involved in OC meetings with committee members several times a week. But our committee members are more enthusiastic then I can realize. At the last AGM, I said I will reduce the activities to minimize the workloads of the committee. However, this was not the will of the committee; they never feel tired in contributing and initiating. They have a high desire spirit and endless energy to developing ideas thus resulting in so many meaningful events. These successful events cannot solely rely on the integrity of one person; it is the result of a well co-ordination team work.
Organizing and participating seminars, forums and conferences in particular the 2 Straits 4 Places Series are very demanding exercise. We had been sitting in OCs in Guangzhou, Macau and Kaohsiung for different forums, nevertheless it is a good way to learn, to observe and to make friendship. Internally within HKIE, we worked closely with other Divisions such as Fire Division and Environmental Division etc and the Headquarters. Joint forum is one way to meet speakers and delegates with diverging skills and views. We had carried out many site visits locally and in China. This is in general one of the most attractive events. Every time we received 3 to 4 times registrations more than we were allocated. Our Annual Dinner is still the most spectacular event, this time successfully enriched by ballet dancing and many thanks to our Ir Dr Hon LO Wai-kwok and Senior Vice President – Ir Victor CHEUNG Chi-kong for their music performance. The Civil Cup basketball and soccer amongst CV Division and the universities had clearly shortened the distance between CV Division and the younger generation.
I am really proud of the committee that works are both high in quantity and quality. Weoffered our best to all members as well as the community. After a period of busy and hard work, when I review the activities I had been involved, I really feel some achievement. "Satisfaction" is my second word. There are yet critical events to be carried out within this two months and no doubt we will strive for the best. We however need your encouragement and support to strength our confidence. Thank you.
Ir Eric CHAN Kar-lock
Chairman, Session 2013/2014
