Programme Highlight

The South-North Water Transfer Project in China aims to divert about 44.8 billion cubic meters of fresh water annually from the Yangtze River to North China through three routes. This seminar will introduce the following aspects: (i) the most critical reasons for implementing the project; (ii) the financing of the project; (iii) the assessments on its benefits and costs; and (iv) the lessons learned during the planning/implementation stages of the project. Based on such examination on one hand and the major challenges in future water planning and management on the other, the future of large-scale and long-distance water transfer projects will be discussed.

Speaker

Dr. Ji CHEN is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He obtained his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the University of California, San Diego, USA. In 2004, he moved to HKU as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Chen’s research interests are in water resources, climate change and urbanization effects, water-related natural hazards (floods and droughts), land surface modeling, integrated watershed processes, terrestrial hydrological processes, teleconnection of climate patterns, and application of remote sensing. He has graduated five PhDs and two MPhils. Presently, he serves on two SCI journals (JHER and SERRA) as an associate editor.
