Programme Highlight

Under the Universal Accessibility Programme (UAP), Government is actively taking forward the retrofitting of barrier-free access facilities (BFA) for footbridges, subways and elevated walkways maintained by Highways Department as well as other walkways meeting various criteria on functions and accessibility.  In this seminar, the speakers will share their experience on the management of the UAP and design and construction for retrofitting of BFA facilities in the form of lifts and ramps.  On management aspects, the speakers will speak on the history of the UAP, the present status of the programme and future outlook.  On design aspects, the speakers will explain the key design objectives for BFA facilities, issues encountered in achieving these objectives in a congested urban environment and the solutions, ways for mitigating conflicts with existing underground utilities as well as the adoption of mechanical ventilation in enhancing energy efficiency.  On construction aspects, the speakers will discuss the practical problems encountered in diversion of utilities, arrangements for executing construction works in a congested urban environment and issues encountered in implementing temporary traffic arrangements for the construction works.
