Programme Highlights:-
Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant is a key water supply management initiative under the Total Water Management (TWM) strategy promulgated by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The desalination plant will help diversify the water supply resources to better prepare Hong Kong for coping with climate change.
The first stage of Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant will have a water production capacity of 135,000 cubic metres (m3) per day with provision for future expansion to the ultimate capacity up to 270,000 m3 per day, meeting 5% to 10% of the fresh water demand of Hong Kong. The desalination plant will draw sea water from Joss House Bay. By adopting the reverse osmosis desalination technology, the plant will produce fresh water in compliance with the World Health Organisation Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality. The project also involves the construction of an associated trunk feed system for transferring fresh water from the desalination plant to the existing service reservoirs in Tseung Kwan O. The technical seminar will give an overview of the project and the desalination technology.
Ir CHAN Tak Yeung, Thomas, Chief Engineer / Consultants Management, Water Supplies Department, HKSARG
Dr. Srinivas (Vasu) Veerapaneni, Desalination Technology Leader, Black & Veatch
Ir Thomas CHAN is the Chief Engineer of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) in charge of the implementation of various key waterworks projects, including the Tai Po Water Treatment Works Expansion, Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant, etc. He joined WSD in 1991 and is well versed in design, construction, operation and maintenance of waterworks installations, customer services and water conservation. In 2008, Ir Chan joined the Development Bureau with the responsibility of formulating and implementing construction manpower policies. He joined the Highways Department in 2012 and participated in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge HK Boundary Crossing Facilities Project before returning to WSD.
Dr. Srinivas (Vasu) Veerapaneni has 25-year experience in advanced treatment processes for desalination, reuse, membrane separation, emerging technologies and concentrate treatment. He has authored 70 technical papers and conference papers, and conducted a number of applied research projects for desalination and concentrate treatment. He has led the process design of numerous seawater reverse osmosis desalination facilities, including the TKO Desalination Plant (HK), the Escondida Water Supply project (Chile) and SingSpring and TuasSpring Desalination Plant (Singapore). Dr. Vasu has considerable experience in the process design of water treatment plants including the Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant (Australia), the expansion of the 70 mgd Orange County Water District’s Groundwater Replenishment Scheme (USA), and Changi NEWater plants (Singapore).
